Lawrence and Kim are at the Hoover Dam testing out a model that predicts earthquakes when an unknown fault nearby ruptures, triggering a massive earthquake which destroys the dam, killing Kim. This greatly upsets Lawrence, and he is determined to continue with their project.

He learns that the San Andreas fault has become unstable, and it causes an 9.1 magnitude earthquake that rocks California. Lawrence and his colleagues realize that the San Andreas fault has not calmed down and that there will be a bigger earthquake in San Francisco. With the help of a reporter who had come to Caltech to interview him and the students in the media lab, Lawrence broadcasts a warning over TV of the coming earthquake and for everyone in San Francisco to flee.
A short time later, Lawrence and his colleagues are monitoring the situation when the earthquake happens. Taking cover, Lawrence tells the others that they won't feel it for long but to pray for the people of San Francisco. In the aftermath, Lawrence determines that it was a 9.6, the largest earthquake ever recorded.
In the aftermath of the destruction caused by the earthquakes, an upset Lawrence watches the news and is assured by the reporter who had helped him that his quick action saved lives that day.
